Welcome to our Baroque musical world
The Baroque period covers the 17th–18th century and embraces painting, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts, and music. Considered to be one of the richest and most diverse periods in music history, the era heralded significant new vocal and instrumental genres such as opera, oratorio, cantata, sonata and the concerto. It saw the birth of the orchestra, with the concerto giving soloists the chance to showcase their skills. And enabled composers like Claudio Monteverdi, J.S. Bach, and George Frideric Handel to flourish.
Pallinsburn House Concert
The Berwick Baroque Players performed at the Pallinsburn House Concert on Thursday 22nd January 2026. The concert took place in the library and the programme included excerpts from Handel’s Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks, Boismortier’s Concerto a Cinq and Corelli’s Pastorale. Pallinsburn House is a Grade II* listed 18th-century country house situated at Crookham, Northumberland. Funds were raised in aid of Ford and Etal churches.
Music & the art of the Baroque
Art historian Maria Chester’s fascinating audio-visual lecture on music and the art of the Baroque (Saturday 28th Feb 2026, 2pm) was complemented by live music from Edinburgh’s Gal Trio. Anoukia Nistor (cello), Elinor Roderick (violin) and Serenna MacLellan (flute) joined Maria on stage and played selected 17th/18th century pieces from the vast catalogue of J.S. Bach, Vivaldi and Handel. Featured artists critically assessed by Maria included Velázquez, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin, and Vermeer. Between them, Maria and The Gal Trio, explored this magical creative period that revolutionised how we listen and view music and art.
